IN China mobile phones are disguised as cigarette packets -to avoid embarrassment, and a fine.
This is China, where Gongan county responds to concerns about a fall in its tax take by issuing a smoking edict, ordering officials to inhale 230,000 packs of local Hubei-produced cigarettes over the year.
Failure to meet the target will be met with a fine.
The local government can reap duty on sales of cigarettes produced locally but not from elsewhere – and the ciggies in neighbouring Hunan province are better. It’s protectionism – but doesn’t encouraging smoking Chain look a more friendly place?
