How Drama Queen Nikole Churchill Dragged Obama Into A Beauty Race
MEET Nikole Churchill, Hampton University’s new Homecoming Queen.
Churchill is the first non-black Homecoming Queen in her southern Virginia university’s history, seeing off the challenge of nine other finalists. The vanquished nine are all black. The five judges who selected her for victory are all black.
But having won, she is heckled at a college American football game. The losers give something less than the thousand megawatt grins required. This is one big break with tradition.
Of course, it might depend on which picture you look at. The Times’ piece features this picture of Churchill surrounded by her ladies in waiting. On Churchill’s Facebook page, there is this other picture, of all winners and losers united in the customary grin of unbridled joy. But Miss Churchill senses something wrong.
Sure, she entered a beauty contest she thought she could win. But in winning she senses a race issue. Had she lost, it might have been the same. She decides to write to Barack Obama, a kindred spirit. Like him, she grew up in Hawaii.
“I feel as though you could relate to my situation. It would be much easier to say that possibly some were not accepting of the news because I wasn’t the most qualified contestant; however, the true reason for the disapproval was because of the color of my skin. I am not African-American. Despite the unfortunate beliefs that some are saying I should not have won, I am desperately trying to focus on those who believe in me and support me and my goal to represent this beautiful, multicultural campus the very best way that I can.”
As the Times reports:
She said she was honoured to have been nicknamed “Lil Obama”, and invited the President to visit the university to help to spread some “aloha spirit” around the campus.
She would be honoured if Obama would make her a star. From being a student who can perform a decent Hawaiian hula in a pink and white swimsuit, she is a student with a cause and high media profile. She’s not complaining – she’s showboating.
But say the words “Obama” and “race” and the President and a willing media leap into action. Or not. No reply from Obama as yet. No colas on the lawn. And maybe not even that much of a big deal.
Brittany Riddock, a second-year student, told The Washington Post there was “no comparison between a black man becoming President and a white woman winning a beauty pageant at a black school”.
Well, thanks to the savvy Miss Churchill, there now is. Churchill later apologized to the Hampton University community for writing the letter. But
all around media storm rages, making a crisis out of a drama queen and allowing anyone to promote their vested interest:
You want controversy?
Is it Wrong for Someone Who is Not Black to be Crowned the Queen of an Historically Black College??? – Bossip
You want to foment racism?
DO BLACKS BELIEVE IN DIVERSITY? WELL…NO! – Angry White Dude
You want to bash Obama?
Like Miss Churchill, Barry isn’t handling the fact that coherent Americans view him as nothing more than a college kid in a hula skirt. Like a heckling gaggle of disgruntled Hampton University students Americans are beginning “…doubt Obama’s abilities to represent.” – American Thinker
You want to portray Obama – the world’s most powerful man – as the victim?
Trenton Mayor Douglas Palmer, a Hampton alum, called the historic selection a “positive happening” for his old school…
“I’m certain that a lot of the criticisms toward President Obama are based on race. We are witnessing a nastiness toward President Obama that is more than just a difference of opinion,” Palmer said –Trentonian
Meanwhile, Miss Churchill remains quite fit and ready to smile and wave at a moment’s notice. She is ready for her close up…
