Madeleine McCann’s Kidnapper Turns Up On Facebook
MADDIE WATCH – Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann: On Facebook, Madeleine McCann’s kidnapper has created a fan group. The message is:
“If 2,000,000 people join this group, I will give back Maddie McCann.”
Facebook plus Madeleine McCann: the tabloids are going to love this one. The person who set this is up is either: a) a kidnapper; b) a fantasist; c) unaware of the reward for the child’s return; d) a shock comic looking to attract lots of attention to themselves; e) a parodist mocking how people use the web to talk to Madeleine McCann and show how much they care?
It looks like (d) because around 60,000 people are reported to have signed up to join the site which the Star and Daily Record agree contained “sick jokes”.
The group was created on December 10 and was finally shut down on Monday by Facebook administrators after thousands of people called for it to be deleted.
In a few weeks, this Facebook site has attracted tens of thousands of followers? The group’s creator posted such look-at-me gems as:
* “I’m celebrating Christmas in Portugal this year! It’ll just be me and Maddie though.”
* “She’s doing fine. I just purchased a PS3, so she has some company in the wine cellar.”
And what about the strength of the protest?
More than 6000 people joined seven separate groups set up in protest against the original group. Others branded the creator sick.
Ten times as many people liked the site as opposed it. And it seems there is a fine line between being a fantasy child abductor and being a concerned internet commenter. Says they:
* “The parents could have been looking at it thinking that all day, every day their missing daughter is in the hands of a sick, perverted, a******e. “It just makes you feel physically sick.”
* “Give her back. She has got a family, you know. You’re well harsh. Get your head sorted out.”
* “I think you sick people should give her back to people that love her.”
The shock might not be that someone made jokes about Madeleine McCann but that people saw it as a genuine cause and attempted to engage the nutter in lively debate.
Of course, we’ve been here before. As one web troll write:
“fing is these people dont realise we dont take the internet or facebook that seriously we switch off n carry on wiv our lives. internet is just a place to have a laugh.”
Ha-ha. A joke about kidnapping a child. He-he-he-he-he…
