Jon Venables: Jack Straw Gets Denise Fergus To Be Quiet

THE Jon Venables story: Jack Straw met James Bulger’s mum Denise Fergus yesterday.

They met at Blackburn Town Hall in the heart of the Justice Secretary’s constituency and Straw will have told the 43-year-old mother of the murdered two-year-old a little of what he knows.

How much we may never know because Jack. probably/possibly made a point about preserving the Rule of Law.

While a former Minister and two other MPs were trying to tell a judge – about to look at their said to be iffy expense claims – they were above the Law, Jack was telling Denise she definitely was not and should keep anything he said as private.

Well perhaps he did, but as the country’s chief legal politician did he have any right to tell Denise anything of what she was desperate to know?

Jack Straw also has a duty to not prejudice the position of re-called on life-licence Jon Venables, the 27-year-old who as a ten-year-old was one of two children who killed James.

Not an easy position for either Straw or Denise.

After the hour-long meeting a spokesman for Mr Straw said the Justice Secretary tried to answer Mrs Fergus’s questions ‘as fully as he could’. Which may mean very little at all.

The BBC said Chris Johnson, a spokesman for Mrs Fergus, said the meeting had been cordial and they parted on good terms.

He added:

“She was encouraged that Mr Straw did devote over an hour of his time to meeting her and was quite attentive in listening to the questions that she posed, and clearly took a lot of detailed notes.”

When asked whether Mrs Fergus was happier after the meeting, after previously saying she was “sick” of officials “closing doors in her face”, Mr Johnson said she was content.
