Lianne Smith: The Vicar’s Wife Charged With A Double Murder

LIANNE Smith has been charged with the murder of her two children, Rebecca and Daniel.

Judge Rafael Fernandez ruled there was evidence that the mother was responsible for the deaths and ruled she be jailed pending trial.

A British mother has confessed to killing her two young children in a Spanish holiday resort, court officials have claimed.

The 43-year-old is suspected of smothering her daughter Rebecca, five, and 11-month-old son Daniel with a plastic bag after her partner Martin Smith was extradited to Britain on child sex charges.

After a failed attempt to kill herself using the same plastic bag the distraught mother spent hours lying beside the lifeless bodies she had tucked into a bed in Room 101 of the Hotel Miramar in the resort town of Lloret de Mar.

And then inevitable human interest angle. A source – a parent who met Lianne Smith through the English language preschool group she ran in Barcelona – says:

“She was like a vicar’s wife. Extremely smartly dressed and strait-laced, but she looked like a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown, so frightened, and scared.”

Police repsond to speculation that they let the children down:

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said they originally attempted to trace Mrs Smith and her daughter after they left their home in the area in 2007, but failed to do so. He said: “As soon as we became aware of the arrest of Martin Smith we instigated a welfare check – through authorities in Spain – on Lianne and Rebecca.

“We were informed that they were safe and well. Lianne declined all offers of police help and support and stated her intention to remain in Spain – as was her legal right – and not to return to the UK. At this point we also became aware of the existence of Rebecca’s younger brother.”
