Anuj Bidve was not the victim of a race hate crime
ANUJ Bidve was the victim of a hate crime. So say the police investigating the murder of the 23-year-old Indian student in Salford.
Says Chief Superintendent Kevin Mulligan, divisional commander for Salford:
“We have not established a clear motive for the senseless murder of Anuj, and there is no definitive evidence pointing to it being racially motivated. However, we are treating this as a hate crime based on the growing perceptions within the community it was motivated by hate.”
Again there is the mention of Anij Bidve’s murder being racially motivated but there is no proof that it was. Police are dealing in “perception”. Mulligan adds:
“What I want to stress is that regardless of the motive, it does not change the way detectives from our major incident team are investigating this murder and from day one we have pursued every possible line of inquiry to identify who is responsible for this despicable crime.”
So. Why mention race, then? We have seen no mention of a robbery, drugs or a gang initiation. Only race.
The Crown Prosecution Service define Hate Crime as:
Hate crime is any criminal offence committed against a person or property that is motivated by hostility towards someone based on their disability, race, religion, gender identity or sexual orientation.
So. What what was it about Anuj Bidve that cauased this killers to hate him?
The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and the Crown Prosecution Service have a nationally agreed definition of Hate Crime. Hate crimes are taken to mean any crime where the perpetrator’s hostility or prejudice against an identifiable group of people is a factor in determining who is victimised. This is a broad and inclusive definition. A victim does not have to be a member of the group. In fact, anyone could be a victim of a hate crime.
You just need to upset the criminal by your very presence on Earth to be the victim of a hate crime.
The CPS and ACPO have agreed 5 monitored strands of hate crime as set out below.
Hate crime
A hate crime is any criminal offence that is motivated by hostility or prejudice based upon the victim’s:disability
race
religion or belief
sexual orientation
transgender identity
Was Anuj Bidve killed because he was a Hindu?
Five men have now been arrested in connection with the murder of Anuj Bidve.
Anuj Bidve’s killer is white.
The Manchester Evening News writes:
Shooting of student Anuj Bidve on Salford street WAS a race hate crime, say police
No. They did not say that. They said it was hate crime. A race hate crime is defined as:
Any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a person’s race or perceived race.
Mulligan goes out of his way to say it is NOT a race hate crime. So. Why does the MEN say it was?
