What happened to two Muslim coverts acting ‘suspiciously’ by the London Olympic canoeing venue?
ON June 29, the Daily Mail told us that “Two Muslim converts have been arrested on suspicion of plotting an attack on the London Olympic canoeing venue after police spotted them on a dinghy nearby“.
Tammy Hughes (not a Muslim convert) told readers:
The Muslim coverts were “acting suspiciously close to the venue in Waltham Abbey, Essex”.
Mizanur Rahman, 29, said the arrests ‘might have had something to do with the fact that they recently went canoeing’ on the River Lee, a branch of which runs through the Olympic site in east London.

In the Daily Telegraph, Duncan Gardham (also not a Muslim covert) tells his readers:
Two Muslim converts were arrested in East London yesterday on suspicion of plotting an attack against the London Olympic canoeing venue.
The words “Muslim.” features prominently in both reports. The Guardian, however, reports on the same story but mentions the word Muslim not once.
Between them, Tammy and Duncan have the geography right and wrong. Says Gardham:
Sources said the arrests were based on a tip-off after men were seen behaving suspiciously close to the venue in Waltham Abbey, Hertfordshire on Monday.
Waltham Abbey is in Essex. The Lee Valley White Water Centre is at: Station Road Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire EN9 1AB.
With the most basic facts wrong, we wonder what happened to 18-year-old Jamal ud-Din (pictured) and a man known only as “Zakariya”.
The AP reports:
Scotland Yard says an 18-year-old and a 32-year-old arrested at separate addresses in east London last week have been freed “with no further action.”
Such are the facts. Although the Mail and Telegraph’s articles both remain untouched.
