Arsenal Balls: Jack Wilshere auditions for the Daily Mail
Arsenal’s FA Cup victory parade excited the Daily Mail after Jack Wilshere stood on the gantry and swore. The Mail says Wilshere “heaped more embarrassment on Arsenal”.
The paper adds:
Young children, along with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, were present at the celebrations as Wilshere chanted: ‘What do we think of Tottenham?’ before adding: ‘And what do we think of s***?
Having laughably bracketed Wenger, 65, and toddlers in a group who must be protected from such words, we wonder when Mail readers and writers became so sensitive?
Previously the Mail has reported:
* Swearing is a harmless emotional release which could make you feel stronger, researchers have claimed – though only in moderation.
* Oh S**T! Children really DO pick up swear words like ‘vacuum cleaners’ when they overhear them
* Toddler becomes internet sensation after video of her swearing while doing the ice bucket challenge goes viral. Scarlett-Rose Davis, 3, begged grandparents to let her take part in craze. Video captures moment she blurts out ‘f***ing hell’ after challenge
The Mail shared the video with its readers. And then one of its writers opined:
* More than 200,000 people have now watched the 23-second clip of the girl being drenched with cold water and yelling: ‘F***ing hell!’ Never mind the mentality that thinks drenching small children with ice-cold water is entertaining and worth sharing with strangers online — it’s the child’s unabashed foul language that truly jolts.
A search for ‘sh*t’ on the Mail Online coughs up lots and lots of examples. (We’ve edited the swearing):
Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner uses it. London’s Transport Commissioner Sir Peter Hendy is quoted:
‘On (the) Southeastern (train company) the trains are like the Wild West. They are sh*t, awful.
And in an article on yoga, we read:
They go to Hot Yoga classes five times a week and they are just masking their sh*t and using it as an excuse to burn up calories they don’t have to spare.’
And more:
And there is the Mail’s editor, Paul Dacre, profiled by the Guardian as a man who “will swear and summon up reporters”. Who says: “These people couldn’t bring up a fu**ing hamster!”
Stephen Fry noted:
Lord Dacre is himself a frothing autocrat. An absolutely foul-mouthed boss, who constantly screams the c word at just about anyone. He would have read my Open Letter to David Cameron and yelled that “that c*nt Fry needs another fucking dressing fu**ing down” — just the kind of language that his paper would prissily decry of course, there’s the glory in the vile bastard’s hypocrisy.
If he played for Arsenal, it would be ’embarrassing’ backpage news. He would be a ‘role model’ who had let children down.
Why is it always different for footballers?
