Carl Froch, Britain’s unknown boxing superstar
IN the early hours of Sunday morning, Nottingham’s Carl “The Cobra” Froch produced one of the great comebacks in boxing to beat Jermain Taylor and retain his WBC super-middleweight world title. Taylor was ahead on the judges’ scorecards and would have won the fight, but Froch stopped him with just 14 seconds left of a thrilling 12th and final round.
Not that you’d know. No British TV station aired the fight – Froch’s fans could only watch a live online stream of the world-title clash – though ITV did show it later, on Sunday evening.
Froch is a bona fide world champion but he lacks the box-office appeal of other British world champs, like Ricky Hatton and the now-retired Joe Calzaghe. That’s because he lets his fists do all his talking, and Britain likes a boxer who can also talk with his mouth, even if he’s a lovable loser like Frank Bruno.
