F1 FAIL! McLaren given suspended ban, Lewis Hamilton free to race
TODAY, McLaren have been punished by the FIA with a suspended three-race ban for misleading race stewards at the Aussie GP.
Lewis Hamilton’s team admitted five charges of breaching F1 rules at an inquiry on Wednesday in Paris.
There was some talk of McLaren being thrown out of this season’s championship, which would have been very harsh, so the team – including world champion Hamilton – can count themselves fortunate to get away with what amounts to a severe slap on the wrists.
The three-race penalty will only be enforced if “further facts emerge” about the team’s behaviour in Melbourne, or if there is a “further breach” of the rules.
As for Hamilton, who issued a public apology after the incident in which he insisted he was not a ‘liar’, has escaped personal punishment and is free to drive at the next GP, to be held in Spain on 10 May.
