Chris Lewis Presents Britain’s Jailed Sportsmen
David Jenkins
The winner of the European 400 metres title and a silver medalist the British 400m relay team at the ’72 Olympics, Jenkins was in 1988 found guilty of smuggling more than $70m worth of steroids across the border from Mexico into the United States. Jenkins was sentenced to seven-year stretch at the Mojave Desert prison.
Said Jenkins of steroids:
“I wasn’t caught, but it changes you. From the moment you take the first pill it changes you – and I don’t mean chemically. You become a liar. You have to live with that lie for the rest of your life. There are some athletes in Britain who are doing that now, living a perpetual lie. They know who they are. And I feel sorry for them, because they are in a living hell.”
