Everyone Who Supports Rage Against The Machine Is Wrong
RAGE Against The Machine are selling themselves as the rebel yell, the antidote to Joe ‘Joenas’ McElderry, the Disney character X Factor product. They aren’t. A rebel is someone who rebels. A rebel is not a band signed to Sony records who goes on the BBC to explain their position as champions of a Facebook group. A rebel is someone who does what convention does not want them to do, nor expect them, to. BBC. Facebook. Sony. Let’s hear it for the rebels!!!
On BBC Radio 5 Rage guitarist Tom Morello and front man Zack De La Rocha did an impression of two politicians happy to win a by-election:
“This is a really completely grassroots campaign started by real fans of music… we’re honoured that they’ve chosen our song to be the rebel anthem to be the song to topple the X Factor monoply… We see this as a necessary break in the chain of that control…It’s an excellent lesson that when people band together and make their voices heard, they can completely overturn the system.”
Oh, and in case you think working for Sony and earning loads cash makes you about as rebellious as the man in the cul de sac who indicated right and turned left, Morello says:
When you live in a capitalistic society, the currency of the dissemination of information goes through capitalistic channels. Would Noam Chomsky object to his works being sold at Barnes & Noble? No, because that’s where people buy their books. We’re not interested in preaching to just the converted. It’s great to play abandoned squats run by anarchists, but it’s also great to be able to reach people with a revolutionary message, people from Granada Hills to Stuttgart.
But the best bit is that the band’s fans who are campaigning for Killing In The Name Of want everyone to do as they want them to. As the song says:
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!
Motherfucker!
Uggh!
What that should say is: “I won’t do what you tell me, because I want to do what I want and then I want you to do what I want you to do.” Are we in agreement? Now go and buy the record. We won’t do what you tell me to. We will wage media war to take that most rebellious of things – the Christmas No.1…
