In the background are seen the chimneys of the crematory (R and L), in which the bodies of the murdered prisoners were burnt. The Nazi SS had the concentration camp established in 1940 and enlarged to an extermination camp in 1941. It is believed that 2.5 to 4 million people, mostly Jews, were killed here by the Nazi regime until the end of World War II in 1945.
