Baby Peter Connelly Is Peta’s Dumb Animal Of The Month
PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the self-styled voice of dumb animals, uses the face of Baby P – Peter Connelley’s – killer Steven Barker to illustrate a campaign against animal cruelty. Says the message:
“Steven Barker: Animal Abuser, Baby Abuser, Rapist. People who are violent towards animals rarely stop there.”
It is banned by the Advertising Standards Authority.
Peta’s reasoning is not only that it’s will shock people but that animal abusers were also violent to people. So there’s the poster on a billboard in Haringey, north London, where 17-month-old Peter lived and died in 2007.
The ASA says Peta used the picture in a “shocking way merely to attract attention”.
“We considered that the claim and image used in the ad had been used in a shocking way merely to attract attention and that the reason did not justify the means in this case. We therefore also considered that the ad was likely to cause serious offence and distress to some people.”
Says Peta spokesperson Poorva Joshipura:
“Cruelty to animals and children is inherently shocking, and in creating the ad we hoped to prevent other children and animals from suffering the kind of shocking abuse that Baby P and Mr Barker’s animal victims suffered.”
Er?
As a child, we have been told, Barker had tortured guinea pigs and frogs. And Peta says:
Update: After receiving a complaint from Leslie Franks Solicitors that the description of its client hadn’t made the distinction that Barker was not convicted of murder but rather of “causing or allowing” the death of Baby P, PETA U.K. redesigned this billboard. Convicted child abusers’ violent acts send just as clear a warning to anyone who might overlook animal abuse.
How’s that for perspective..?
