Jon Venables: Vomiting Satan, Evil, Nurture And An ‘Unpleasant’ Thing
JAMES Bulger: Anorak’s at-a-glance look at the case of one of James Bulger’s killers Jon Venables in the news. Venables has been in the news ever since the Government issued a press release that he had been arrested and put back in jail.
Daily Mail: “BULGER KILLERS: Freeing them was wrong, says juror”
The Mail shares a few words with Alan Barry, the jury foreman in the James Bulger trial.
Mr Barry, 71, who runs a Christian charity shop, said: “I can still see the photographs of the injuries we had to look at, which were horrendous. It is still so vivid. I am surprised that it was Venables who has reoffended as he was the quieter of the two in the trial — crying into his hankie and looking nervous.”
Juror turns judge:
“The pair should have been sentenced to a lot longer in prison. I, and some of the other jurors, were surprised at what they got. Although they were only ten-year-olds at the time, I believe they knew what they were doing. A sentence like that was ludicrous. And when they were released, they should have been monitored more closely.”
How closely?
But Thompson and Venables should never have gone to jail at all.
The Times: Jon Venables and Robert Thompson would have escaped charges under plans
Jon Venables and Robert Thompson would not have been charged with the murder of James Bulger if the age of criminal responsibility had been 12 when they killed the toddler.
Well, no. But why speculate?
Maggie Atkinson is “England’s children’s commissioner”, whose job is to, er, commission children to do stuff. she says:
If the news is anything to go by, it seems a terrible time to be a child. Incest, the murder of a young Facebook fan, paedophile priests and revived memories of the James Bulger killing all make headlines. A child starves to death in Birmingham. Schools fail, numbers of teenage pregnancies and binge-drinkers rise and hoodies hang about, unhuggable, on street corners.
Let’s shoot the kids now – put them out of their misery. Or how about we send them to Iraq? That for alter. For now Alice Thomson and Rachel Sylvester are shooting the breeze with Atkinson:
The office of the Children’s Commissioner, though, is decorated in bright primary colours, with a Connect 4 game on the table in reception and happy children’s drawings on the walls.
Well, it keeps the adults entertained, their minds distracted from killer kidz. Here’s Maggie on Venables and Thompson:
“What they did was exceptionally unpleasant and the fact that a little boy ended up dead is not something that the nation can easily forget. But they shouldn’t have been tried in an adult court because they were still children.”
Unpleasant? If she’s going to use an adjective where facts are enough can she use a better one than that?
“In most Western European nations they have a completely different way of intervening with youngsters who’ve committed crime. Most of their approaches are more therapeutic, more family and community-based, more about reparation than simply locking somebody up.”
Wasn’t Jon Venables “treatment” community based? Was he placed in isolation? She’s got more to say on the nature of good and evil:
“None of us is born a good person or an evil person. The backgrounds from which we come, and whether we are nurtured and secure, will shape our character. The adults who role-model for us — or don’t — will change who we become, for better or worse. I’m far more a believer in nurture than nature.”
So Jon Venables’ parents are guilty of triggering the “unpleasant” thing?
As an aside, here’s the Vatican’s exorcist in chief Father Gabriele Amorth, again, talking of the possessed:
In many cases, he says, they vomit objects such as nails or glass. Father Amorth has a collection weighing two kilograms. “You get used to being vomited over. I once performed an exorcism on a woman who managed to hit me in the face with a stream of vomit from the other side of the room — physically impossible.”
Did Venables shoot metal objects from his mouth? Would he? One man says he might:
AN ex-cop who quizzed one of James Bulger’s killers has branded the pair as “absolutely evil”.
Detective Sergeant Phil Roberts said: “What they did was evil – if they aren’t evil, who is?”
Camila Batmanghelidjh has more on the children:
But our understanding of the impact of neglect and abuse on the developing brain illustrates that children who perpetrate sadistic violence quite literally have different kinds of minds. Their brains have been rewired by trauma and abuse.
So we should put the parents in ther dock. And their parents. And so on..?
What any of it means is clear: this country has no idea how to deal with the wrong uns – but it does have no shortage of experts…
