In Pictures: X-Ray Of Live Ammo In Afghan Soldier’s Head
THIS is a picture of a two-inch long live round of ammunition lodged in the head of living Afghan soldier. The US Air Force image stems from work by Radiologist Lt Col Anthony Terreri. He explained the patient and discovered that the shrapnel was in fact a 14.5mm unexploded round. Says he:
“I saw that it was not solid metal on the inside. I then looked at the scout image and could see there was an air gap on one end and what looked almost like the tip of a tube of lipstick at the end and decided this didn’t look quite right.”
Wearing body armour, neurosurgeon Major John Bini and anaesthetist Major Jeffrey Rengel removed the bullet in an operation at Bagram Air Field. The patient’s health is “improving”.
Shooting Pains
HOU Guoying, 65, of China, has a pain in her face. She has been complaining of an agonising headache. Guoying has a bullet embedded near her right jaw and ear, having been accidentally shot with a pistol during the Cultural Revolution in 1967. In 1978, an X-ray revealed the bullet in her head. She declined an opertion, fearing the poor medical facilties woudl get her before the bullet. Last month she has the 3.3cm-long bullet removed.
