A Headstone For Rorke’s Drift Survivor Private Thomas Dawe
THEY came to unveil the gravestone of Private Thomas Dawe. He defended Rorke’s Drift during the South African Anglo Zulu war of 1879. The battle was made into a film. Michael Caine starred. “You’re only supposed to blow the bloody Boers off”, was his phrase. Private Dawe was in B Company 2nd Battalion 24th Regiment (2nd Warwickshire). Since his burial on May 23rd 1924, his grave at the Somerset cemetery has remained unmarked. The great grandson of Victoria Cross medal holder Private John Williams (Fielding) V.C, Colin Fielding and great granddaughter of Victoria Cross medal holder Private Fred Hitch V.C, Sandra Barker unveiled the headstone.
