Raoul Moat: His Life And Death In Pictures (With Paul Gascoigne)
RAOUL MOAT is dead. Raoul Maot has killed himself. After seven says on the run for shooting dead Chris Brown and shooting PC David Rathband and Samantha Stobbart, Moat is dead.
He was spotted by a riverbank in Rothbury. He had been hiding out in a storm drain under the village. Police closed in and jumped on him. There was one gun shot heard.
“Be sure to tell everyone how beautiful it is,” begged Kay Evans, and I will. It is a lovely stone-built place, almost an hour from Newcastle, remote enough to have retained its shops and its spirit, and set in the most stunning scenery.
Back to the story:
In another part of the story – well, no story is complete without a celebrity – former England footballer Paul Gascoigne offered to talk to the gunman, claiming he was an acquaintance. Says Gazza on the local radio station:
“He is willing to give in now. I just want to give him some therapy and say ‘come on Moaty, it’s Gazza’. He is alright – simply as that and I am willing to help him. I have come all the way from Newcastle to Rothbury to find him, have a chat with him. I guarantee, Moaty, he won’t shoot me. I am good friends with him.”
He never got the chance. Cornered by the police, Moat shot himself.
Raoul Moat was taken to Newcastle General Hospital.
Northumbria Police says:
“Police can now confirm that Raoul Thomas Moat, 37, of Newcastle, died in hospital early this morning. It followed several hours of negotiations between Moat and police but at around 1.15am it appears, from information available, Moat shot himself. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead at around 2.20am. No officers or members of the public were injured.”
Good result, then?
