Madeleine McCann: A Joint Review, An Online Petition And Begging Letters

by | 3rd, November 2010

MADELEINE McCann: Anorak’s look at the missing child in the news: Our Maddie’s parents are launching an online petition. The idea is to create a movement that will lead to a UK and Portuguese joint review of all evidence in the case of their missing daughter.

Says Gerry McCann:

“Essentially for the last three-and-a-half years the authorities have not been doing anything proactive to help Madeleine.”

Really? They didn’t look for her at all? They never tried to find out what happened that night she went missing?

Do online petitions work? The call to arms goes:

We call on the UK and Portuguese authorities to conduct an independent and transparent review of all information in relation to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann

Will you sign it? It’s easy to. One imagines all journalists will sign it – the McCanns have reliable news for over three years. But will you give money? Or does your sympathy only go so far? Will the NoTW had over some of the reward money it put up as an advance – a reward to the McCanns?

The news media reacts.

The Sun (front page): “McCanns: We fear hunt for Maddie is over.”

They revealed the Find Madeleine Fund has dwindled from £2million at its peak to £300,000.

And what if Goncalo Amaral sues?

Their worldwide search for Maddie – aged three when she disappeared on holiday in Portugal in May 2007 – will be wound up because they will no longer be able to pay specialist investigators when the money runs out. Kate, 42, said: “It will be just me and Gerry left looking for her.”

Can anyone help? Name names:

And they have sent out “begging letters” to sponsors, including author JK Rowling, tycoon Richard Branson, comic Jack Dee and other high-profile celebrities asking them to contribute to the fund.

Do they dare refuse, now that their name shave been made public?

The Mirror adds more names:

A letter written by Gerry will be sent out today to friends and celebrity supporters including David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sir Richard Branson and JK Rowling.

They keep asking.

Says Gerry McCann:

“If the money does run out there would still be a helpline manned by volunteers, email. But it would be very, very difficult. It would essentially mean that any kind of pro-active search for Madeleine would cease.”

Daily Mirror: “WE NEED CASH TO KEEP HUNTING FOR MADDY”

As the couple have retreated from the limelight, so contributions to a kitty which once topped £2million are drying up.

Have they retreated from the limelight? Or has the limelight left them.

(Limelight is an odd phrase for parents of missing child using the media glare to keep their daughter in the news. Does the Mirror see them as celebrities?)

Irish Indy: “McCanns say ‘fluffy, worthless words’ won’t find Madeleine”

Kate McCann speaks:

“Children do get found years down the line. There’s no evidence that Madeleine is not out there alive. It’s just heartbreaking to think that nothing is getting done other than what we are having to do, other than our small team. I don’t want to be appeased and that’s what I feel we’re getting at the moment.
“We need action, we don’t need fluffy worthless words. We need somebody to do something. Madeleine is still missing, she’s a little girl.”

What if..?

“Her abductor is still out there, so by not carrying on, we are putting other children at risk. More needs to be done.”

It could be you next.

Sky News: “Madeleine Petition As Parents Rap Theresa May”

Mrs McCann said:

“Reviews are done in all major investigations, at least in this country. The benefits of pulling together different bits of evidence can be enormous but until that is done we can’t be sure what has been missed. I can’t get my head around the fact that the Government has given up on Madeleine. You have to ask why it isn’t being done in Madeleine’s case. What is the block?”

BBC: “Madeleine McCann inquiry ‘running out of funds”

Kate McCann says:

“It’s been over two years now since anybody other than ourselves have looked for Madeleine and obviously our own team has limitations because they can’t go knocking on people’s doors. They can’t make people speak to them…

“We also know there is information in several regions, lying on different desks, different databases that hasn’t been put together. So two pieces might slot together and give you a result. We could be that much closer to finding Madeleine, but we need co-operation.”
