It remains not about the 270 murdered people but BP’s ambitions in Libya and British Aerospace’s determination to flog as many lucrative arms package as possible throughput the whole region. We stressed the BP link from day one and the Glasgow Herald were on to it too.

Says Gus O’Donnell, the Cabinet secretary:
“Policy was, therefore, progressively developed that Her Majesty’s Government should do all it could, while respecting devolved competencies, to facilitate an appeal by the Libyans to the Scottish government for Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi’s release under the Prisoner Transfer Agreement (PTA) or for release on compassionate grounds.“Such an approach was understood across all relevant departments.”

Megrahi’s medical details remain secret. The man released on compassionate grounds in August 2009 – he had three months to live – is still alive.
Who now speaks for the 270?
