Decimilisation: 1971 And All That
10171880
Trying to see the point of the decimal system is Mr Roger Hutchinson from Hertfordshire as Shell employee Marion Stevens , 20, of Eltham explains at Lawrences Garage, Waterloo, London. From this day some 6000 Shell, BP and National petrol pumps are showing their prices in the new decimal currency. This is because the second stage in the programme of converting petrol pumps in preparation for D-Day, 15th February 1971, has now begun. The total value of the ale through the decimal pump is shown in £p (pounds and new pence) instead of shillings and pence, but the motorist can convert his purchase into present currency as a conversion table is fixed to each pump.
