A tall and doughty opener for New Zealand, Franklin’s tour of England in 1986 ended in disaster at Gatwick Airport, where he was run over by a motorised luggage trolley. He suffered multiple leg fractures which kept him out of the game for 18 months and he was unable to sprint when he finally returned.
