Madeleine McCann: Amaral’s New Book Published Month Before McCanns’ Madeleine
MADELEINE McCann: Anorak’s at-a-glance look at Our Maddie in the news: The Sunday Express brings news of:
WAR OF WORDS LOOMS OVER MADELEINE MCCANN BOOKS
It’s Goncalo Amaral – Maddie: Truth Of The Lie – against
Kate And Gerry McCann – Madeleine.
And it is “WAR”!
FORMER Portuguese police chief Goncalo Amaral is set for a new legal battle with Kate and Gerry McCann after writing a second book about their missing daughter Madeleine.
Well, is she not a literary muse? The innocent child who spawned a bazillion words is nothing if not suited to works of literature?
Mr Amaral’s book will be published in Portugal next month shortly before Kate McCann publishes her fundraising book called Madeleine.
Well, competition is healthy, so they say.
It could not come at a worse time for Kate, 42. She is hoping someone who reads her book will come forward with information about the person who took her daughter on May 3, 2007.
Maybe it comes at a good time, serving to remind readers and the great unwashed that an innocent child went missing and has yet to be found? It may trigger new leads.
Pictures Of All The Madeleine McCann Suspects
The McCanns’ private investigator David Edgar is also preparing to beef up his team in Portugal to react swiftly to any new leads produced by Kate’s book.
Leads produced by the book? Is this saying that the book has new information that could trigger new lines of inquiry? Surely this book has nothing new to say? Or is it that the mere publication of the book could trigger new lines of inquiry? In which case: good?
Amaral’s first book is still on sale. The McCanns wanted it banned. But the Portuguese judiciary said it was legal. (Read what happened and how Anorak forewarned of the perils here.) The book has not been published in the UK.
Says James Murray:
Now the stage is set for a fresh legal battle.
It is?
Mr Amaral’s wife Sofia said: “Goncalo has been working on his book for about six months, spending days and nights assessing all the evidence. He has put in an enormous amount of work. The title has not been decided and a publication date will be sorted out this week. At this stage he doesn’t want to say too much, but he will say his investigation was cut short and he will explain what he would have done if he had been allowed to continue. The book is not just about Madeleine. He gives the background to other big cases he was involved with.”
But in his book he does not prove what happened to Madeleine McCann. His new work sounds like a speculative tome in which Amaral imagines what would have happened.
Ms Amaral goes on:
“The timing of this new book is just coincidental, nothing was planned. We are not trying to cash in on the fourth anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance and we do not want a fight over Kate’s book.”
Not trying to cash in? So, the book will be published for free on the internet, then?
The last word is with an unnamed source. Why unnamed? A child is missing. Why not go on the record? Anyhow, this unnamed source tells us:
“The investigation is very active. There is a hope that Kate’s book will lead to someone coming forward with the key piece of the jigsaw.”
Jigsaw? There is only an empty box for a one-piece jigsaw. All we know is that she vanished. There are no suspects. There is not even any proof of what happened to her. No crime has been confirmed. The jigsaw is a single thread spun out of control…
Those Madeleine McCann books so far:
November 2007: Madeleine: A Most Heartbreaking And Extraordinary Disappearance, by Robert Downing. It’s published by Northern & Shell, who own the Daily Express.
May 2008: Vanished: The Truth About the Disappearance of Madeleine McCann
July 2008: The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: Or The Murder at Road Hill House, by Kate Summerscale, wins a literary award.
It’s 1860 all over again, in the Mail:
Just as the disappearance of little Madeleine McCann today produced a massive reaction among the public, so the gruesome murder of Saville Kent provoked national hysteria in Victorian England…
October 2008: Kate McCanns Diary
Or which the Mail speculated in 2007:
Kate McCann could expect to receive a seven-figure sum for her Madeleine diaries, were she to sell the rights to a publishing house
December 2008: A self-published book by armchair detectives.
October 20, 2010: Goncalo Amaral’s book The Truth Of The Lie. You can now buy it legally in Portugal. But not in the UK – yet…

One week in and the papers begin Watching The Parents, and to specualte: So the Mirror produces: “THE 6 THEORIES.” Only six! Why this cautious approach? But it is all the Mirror has. And readers hear of the “PAEDOPHILE GANG”, the “LONE PAEDOPHILE”, the “JEALOUS MOTHER”, Madeleine wandering off and “DROWNED”, the “OPPORTUNIST PAEDOPHILE”, the “CHILDLESS COUPLE”. But the Sun has more. It has 130 more. As the front-page headline screams: “MADDIE COPS HUNT 130 BRIT PAEDOS.” The paper says “at least” 130 British paedophiles “might” have taken Madeleine McCann. In “ALGARVE IS ‘HAVEN’ FOR PERVS”, readers learn that Portugal is a “magnet for sun-seeking perverts from Britain and the rest of Europe”.
