Sweeney was already serving a life sentence for attempting to murder girlfriend Delia Balmer with an axe in 1994,

Police are looking for three more women who knew Sweeney: a Brazilian called Irani, a Colombian called Maria and a woman called Sue.

The dismembered and headless body of Ms Fields was found in body bags in London’s Regent’s Canal in 2001. The torso of Miss Halstead was found in a canal in Rotterdam, Holland, in 1990, the court heard.

Brian Altman QC, prosecuting, told the jury:

“Police discovered amongst his possessions often lurid and demonic sketches and paintings, as well as pages of verse which reveal an obsessive and virulent hatred of women, and a preoccupation with dismemberment.

“By butchering and disposing of bodies in this way, the killer had intended that neither they should be identified, [n]or he should be.”
