RIP Jack French D.S.M: Remembering HMS Amethyst
FOR some years, Anorak readers have been relating tales of HMS Amethyst.

Regretfully we have to announce the Death of Jack French D.S.M.
Jack “Crossed the Bar” 4/5/11. He was the Telegraphist on board Amethyst during The Yangtze Incident April 1949 and was awarded the Distinguish Service Medal.
In the 1957 film “Yangtze Incident” the actor Ray Jackson played the part of ‘Jack French’

One of the greatest welcomes ever accorded a ship's company was accorded the 150 sailors from the frigate HMS Amethyst when she docked at Devonport (Plymouth) at the end of her 10,000 mile voyage. Here the ship's company march through the crowded streets of the city. The Amethyst, a modified Black Swan-class sloop, had a dramatic escape from Communist Chinese forces on the Yangtse River after being fired upon by shore batteries and severely damaged as well as losing 22 men killed.
