Andy Murray Wins At Queens: He’s Got More Bottle Than A Litre Of Amyl Nitrate

ANDY Murray has won a tennis match against a Frenchman called Jo-Wilfred Tsonga. Murray held aloft the Queen’s Cup as he celebrated victory in the final of the AEGON Championships at The Queen’s Club, London. And we beheld the cup. It is huge. Massive. Only the strongest can win the tournament because only the strongest can lift the cup. This is a tournament with Small Tournament Syndrome. It knows that Wimbledon is the big one (some say the only one) and this is just a small satellite get together for players warming up.

It also gives us the chance to hear Andrew Castle speak. He’s the BBC’s commentator, and he is remorseless. The BBC loves hiring ex sportsmen to present shows in place of journalists. Instead of critique, knowledge, balance and insight you get cheerleading for the team. At one point Castle did try to enlighten us as to the contents of Murray’s drinks bottle. Castle told us that “Murray needs to be careful he picks the right bottle. What with the rules on stimulants and what not, taking the wrong bottle can be catastrophic”, or words very much to that effect. Anorak was intrigued. Does Murray have a litre-bottle of orangey amyl nitrate in his bags?

As we say, this is just a taster. There will lots more of this come Wimbledon. The all England Club is a sporting mecca that places winning just under Kipling, wearing clean white shorts and being the right sort in the league table of skills…
