Tottenham Demands Police Justice For Mark Duggan’s Death: Photos Of A Riot
TROUBLE in Tottenham, North London. Two police patrol cars have been attacked and set on fire where father-of-four (BBC – the Sun says he has five children; the Star counts three) Mark Duggan, 29, was shot dead by police. Petrol bombs have been tossed. Shops have been looted. One has been set alight. A double decker bus is burning.
He was shot near Tottenham Hale station. A police officer was injured. Duggan had been riding in a mini cab. There is talk of an exchange of fire. Reports are that a bullet struck a policeman’s radio and lodged there.
The Daily Mail labels Duggan a “gangsta”. It offers no proof that he was.
The Sun adds:
Duggan, known by the street name Starrish Mark, was a so-called gangsta member of North London’s Tottenham Man Dem gang, which has links to Jamaica’s ruthless Yardies.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission says police stopped the minicab. Armed police under the auspices of the the Trident operational command unit, which deals with gun crime in the black community, attempted to make an arrest. A firearms offices fired two shots with a Heckler & Koch MP5 carbine.
A gun – non-police issue – was recovered at the scene.
Say police:
“Both the radio and the handgun are being sent for expedited forensic tests. The exact sequence of events is subject to the IPCC investigation. A CO19 officer was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure but has since been discharged.”
What happened? The Evening Standard reports:
However, a 20-year-old witness, who works nearby but did not want to be named, said: “I was coming home from work when I saw it all happening in front of my eyes.
“I came around the corner and saw about six unmarked police cars cornering a people carrier near a bus stop. I heard the police shout something like ‘Don’t move’ and I saw them drag the driver out of the car. I don’t know if they dragged the other guy out in the passenger seat. He was the one who got shot – the passenger. About three or four police officers had both men pinned on the ground at gunpoint. They were really big guns and then I heard four loud shots. The police shot him on the floor.”
As for his children:
Miss Simone Wilson has two sons aged 10 and seven and a daughter with Mr Duggan. Another daughter, Kyla Caprice was stillborn two years ago. He had another daughter with another woman. The people on the streets are demanding “justice”. About 120 people have marched from the local Broadwater Farm area to Tottenham Police Station today, forcing officers to close the High Road and put traffic diversions in place.
