American Diplomat Tells Indians That A Bath Can Turn Them White
U.S. Vice-Consul Maureen Chaol is no David Starkey but she is talking to the natives in India. On a tip to Chennai, she told students:
“I was on a 24-hour train trip from Delhi to [the eastern Indian state of] Orissa. But, after 72 hours, the train still did not reach the destination… and my skin became dirty and dark like the Tamilians.”
That’s how it starts. It used to happen in the US in the days of segregation. You’d get on a Greyhound bus across country and sit at the front. After 12 or more hours of travel you’d find that your skin has turned black and clean-faced whites are making you sit at the back. Happily, though, now black you get to torch the bus and nick enough money to set up crack den in the burning wreckage.
