TO Mexico, where Karla Flores, 32, hears a bang. She feels something hit her face. He passes out.

She wakes to find herself in Culiacán General Hospital. Says she:

‘The doctor asked me what happened. I told him that I thought a stone hit me. ‘Then they started to look and discovered that it was some kind of projectile, but they didn’t know what it was.'”

It was a live grenade. The thing has entered her face and stayed there. The jaw bones had applied enough pressure to prevent the thing from detonating.

Flores is placed in isolation.  Staff and patients are evacuated.  Who will operate on her? Step forward  Dr Gaxiola Meza and four volunteers:  two anesthesiologists, Felipe Ortiz and Cristina Soto, the nurse Rodrigo Arredondo and Dr Lidia Soto.

Flores is moved to an open field. Mexican army explosion experts looks on. , they took Karla to an open field to operate her. Flores is put under.  Medics perform a tracheotomy so she could breathe. Four hours later – with half her teeth ripped out and her face scarred – Flores is free.

And how was your day..?
