Christian Bale gets roughed up in China
KAPOW! Batman met his match in China as government security goons decided to rough up Christian Bale while he was trying to visit a blind lawyer. That’s right, a blind lawyer. Bale, star of the Dark Knight, said to unified Chinese officials in funny hats:
“I am here to see Chen Guangcheng.”
Then, a tiny scuffle ensued. See, why Bale didn’t say “I just want to visit a particularly lovely cafe I’ve heard about” is beyond us. Think about it. A tiny village is guarded by goons because of Mr Chen. What’s the stupidest thing to say when approaching them? ‘HELLO! I’M HERE TO DO SOMETHING YOU CLEARLY DON’T WANT ME TO DO! IS THAT OKAY? I’M A THESPIAN YOU KNOW? I WOULDN’T LIKE ALL THIS TO ATTRACT ANY ATTENTION TO ME! OH, IS THAT A FILM CREW FOLLOWING ME?‘
Bale then went about repeating “Why can I not visit this free man?” which saw him getting duffed up. Then, Bale & Co all hotfooted it to their car, where they were chased by a grey minibus for 40 minutes. During this chase, Bale managed to say to camera:
“What I really wanted to do was to meet the man, shake his hand and say what an inspiration he is.”
Of course, there is a serious side to this story. Chen Guangcheng has been confined to his home along with his wife, mother and daughter, and watched around the clock by guards since he was released from prison. He was sentenced to four years for damaging property and disrupting traffic in a protest. Or being blind.
Chen rose to fame after he rallied against what he saw as illegal or forced abortions by the Chinese government.
“This doesn’t come naturally to me, this is not what I actually enjoy — it isn’t about me,” Bale said. “This was just a situation that said I can’t look the other way. I’m not brave doing this. The local people who are standing up to the authorities, who are visiting Chen and his family and getting beaten or detained, I want to support them.”
KAPOW! Sorry. We’ve done that joke.
