Costa Concordia: Will the hero who ground her in shallow water be found?
COSTA Concordia: Is Captain Francesco Schettino a coward who fell into a lifeboat? Is Captain Francesco Schettino a hero who saved lots of lives and only fell into the lifeboat when the ship was almost evacuated. Is Schettino just one of us who got unlucky? Kevin Maher wrote in the Times:
Whichever way you read it, there is something fantastically human, and humanly fallible, about Schettino’s alleged overconfidence on the night, and his alleged use of the Concordia as his personal 114,000-tonne Ferrari, whizzing close to the island of Giglio in order to impress both an old buddy on shore and, allegedly, a foxy lady on board. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve done this in my own life — made stupid mistakes in a bid to impress.
The bigger story is that while Schettino is debated, the death toll has risen to 16. A massive boat with 2,300 tonnes of fuel and at least 4,229 people from 60 countries on board and only 16 died? (That future is likely to rise.)
As our Alan White says:
Someone took the decision to get the ship from the collision point to shallow water and ground her so she did not sink in very deep water. I doubt it was the brave shit who fell into the lifeboat but a junior officer who stuck to the job and got the Leviathan into a position where there was some chance. I hope someone identifies him soon.
Who is he or she?
