Manchester United fan charged with racial abuse

by | 3rd, February 2012

WHO is the Manchester United fan charged with shouting racist abuse at Stoke City players during a Premier League match? Why, he’s Howard Hobson, 57, of Weaver Walk, Openshaw, Manchester. His name and address are made public on the BBC website.

Is that fair?

Hobson is accused of a racially-aggravated public order offence.

The Mirror reprots:

During the match a spectator made a complaint to stewards that a fan in the north stand was shouting abusive comments towards Stoke City players.

At the time of writing, it’s the top story on the BBC News website. Racism in football is big news. Hobson was arrested at the game at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the accused will appear at Trafford Magistrates’ Court. That is all we know.

Here’s the question: are Manchester United fans more racist than Liverpool fans? And are the news media and police intolerant of football, using it to gel the nation behind the illiberal anti-racist cause?

Note: Anyone spot a black face at the Leveson Inquiry into media standards?
