Revealed: What The Queen keeps in her handbag (mints, hook and blanket)

WANT to know what the Queen keeps in her handbag? Sally Bedell Smith, author of Elizabeth the Queen: The Woman Behind The Throne, says he knows. She tells The Lady readers that the bag is not a prop. It contains:

Reading glasses
Mint lozenges
Fountain pen
A “precisely folded” £5 or £10 note on Sundays (for Church collection plate)
A hook

Yes, a hook. A source confides:

“I watched the Queen open her handbag and remove a white suction cup and discreetly spit into it.The Queen then attached the cup to the underside of the table. The cup had a hook on it, and she attached her handbag to it.”

The Queen spits? Like a llama?

Bedell Smith adds:

“At the end of a luncheon or a dinner, even a banquet set with silver gilt and antique porcelain, she has the somewhat outré habit of opening her bag, pulling out a compact and reapplying her lipstick.”

Phil Brown, manager of Hull City football team, has peeked into Her Majesty’s bag. One imagines this an act akin to staring at Medusa, gazing directly at an eclipse or holding a camera to the hem of Liz’s skirts and taking a snap. Brown looked within the magic bag and lived. Says he:

“It was almost like a lady’s prop with essential items. It had things that you would expect – make-up, (coin) purse, sweeteners she put in her coffee, the normal stuff. You expect that a lady-in-waiting would carry her handbag, but for the Queen, it was almost like a comfort blanket.”

The Queen is Linus Van Pelt, the Snoopy extra. Who knew..?
