Charlotte Church gets £600,000 phone hacking payout
CHARLOTTE Church have accepted damages (£300,000) and costs of £300,000 from the News of the World’s publisher, News International, for phone hacking.
The High Court was told:
“Maria[Church’s mother] in particular is a vulnerable person, with a complex medical history. The News of the World found out about this and published private details of her hospital treatment. At her lowest moment, the News of the World issued her with an ultimatum and coerced her into giving them an in-depth interview about her self-harming and attempted suicide. She felt she had no choice but to give the interview and was deeply traumatised by the publication of the story in the News of the World.”
The news group paid Milly Dowler’s family £2m in damages and £1m towards charities of her parents’ choice. Others reportedly received:
Jude Law – £130,000
Sienna Miller – £100,000
Tessa Jowell – £200,000
Max Clifford – £1million
Sadie Frost – £40,000
Lisa Gower – £30,000; she was in a relationship with comedian Steve Coogan
