Vladimir Putin’s Pussy Riot problem
PUSSY Riot are a Russian band courting controversy. The all-female group, inspired by the American riot grrrl movement, put on a show in Moscow’s Orthodox Christ the Saviour Cathedral. They staged a sweary “punk prayer” (Hail Mary, Putin Put) critical of Vladimir Putin.
As a result, two women have been arrested and jailed until their trials. There have been protests in Paris, Moscow and Berlin.
Virgin, Virgin, Putin Put
Put Putin, Putin Put
(End chorus)The black robe, gold epaulettes
All parishioners are crawling on the bow
The ghost of freedom in heaven
Pride sent to Siberia in chainsThe head of the KGB, their chief saint
Leads protesters in prison under the escort
In order not to offend the Holy
Women need to have and to loveHoly shit, shit, shit the Lord
Holy shit, shit, shit the Lord(Chorus)
Virgin, Virgin, become a feminist
Become a feminist, a feminist stand
(End chorus)Church Praise rotten vodzhey
The procession of black limousines
In school you going to the preacher
Go to class – bring him money!Patriarch Gundyaev believe in Putin’s
It would be better in God, bitch, believed
Belt of the Virgin is no substitute for meetings –
In protest of our Ever-Virgin Mary!(Chorus)
Virgin, Virgin, Putin Put
Put Putin, Putin Put
(End chorus)This is not Pussy Riot’s first guerrilla concert. The group has performed a number of dissident songs in public places, including one on Red Square called “Putin Pissed Himself.”
Pictures show they also staged a show in a shoe shop and another on the roof of a train.
Maria Alekhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova have been charged with hooliganism. Both are on hunger strike, having been placed in prison until their April 24 trial. They deny being involved. Alekhina is mother to five-year-old son; Tolokonnikova has a daughter aged four.
It’s hard to see who Pussy Riot are given that its members wear colourful balaclavas. But Putin says he has the criminals.
Alexander Kashin tells Gazeta.ru news:
“As soon as they started to perform, guards came from all sides, started grabbing them and tried to chase them out by yelling at them.”
Boris Yakemenko, leader of the Orthodox Body youth movement, said:
“Any filth is always more visible against a clean background. If they had done this in a brothel, nobody would have noticed. It is for people like this that churches are needed.”
Father Andrei Kurayev, a renowned religious columnist, wrote:
“The thing done by them is an outrage, but it is a legal outrage. It is a time of buffoonery … During Peter the Great’s time, those things were absolutely in line.”
Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina face seven years prison.
Says Putin:
“If they broke the law…I bring my apologies to all worshipers and the entire clergy on their behalf if they themselves haven’t been able to do this. I hope this never happens again.”
So…
What do you see the ultimate goal of Pussy Riot?
– There are a number of purposes. For example, we want the political prisoners were released to stop at the direction of senior government officials to wind up and unwind in the criminal case who is a danger to the regime.
We have information that the staff of the Patriarch Kirill had numerous calls himself the head of the Moscow police, General Kolokoltsev with the requirement to have a criminal case against the member of punk-prayer “Mother, Putin Put” Christ the Savior Cathedral in Article 213 of the Criminal Code (Hooliganism) and Article 282(Incitement to hatred or hostility). Because we dared to point out the failure of the Christian church hierarchy, and asceticism in favor of the criminal scale connection of church and state.
Meanwhile, the Holy pastor is not shy about openly wear a watch valued at $ 40,000, which is unacceptable when so many families of his flock lives on the brink of poverty. We pay attention to the feelings of believers and truly do not understand why they do not resent when their pastor demonstrates a love of money and aggressively campaigning for a candidate who is like no other, is far from Christian observance of the commandments. So punk prayers Pussy Riot has served not in the temple, and the house of the Patriarch of Moscow, located in the property is not even the ROC, and the balance of the Moscow mayor’s office. This is the house of the patriarch, because the Orthodox Church is not supposed to be all that is now located inside the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour – a leased banquet halls, night clubs and elite car wash (“Made in USA”, as indicated on the official website of the Foundation Church of Christ the Saviour).
However, we respect all religions as an integral part of culture. In Pussy Riot is Orthodox. That’s why we hurt so much because he works with the church, Patriarch Kirill.
Will feminists bring down Putin? Will Pussy Riot achieve anything meaningful? Or has Georgia or the Ukraine just got its Eurovision entry?
PS – the woman’s face in the lead photo is priceless.
