Daniel Bartlam gets 16 years of murdering his mother – the media get Coronation Street
DANIEL Bartlam was 14 when he murder his mother Jacqueline Bartlam, 47, with a hammer as she slept at their home in Redhill, Notts. Bartlam then poured petrover his mother’s body and set it on fire. He claimed burglars had committed the heinous crime. At Nottingham Crown Court Bartlam has been sent to prison for a minmum of 16 years.
Detective Chief Inspector Kate Meynell, from Nottinghamshire Police tells all media:
“The level of violence, the degree of planning and the extent of his lies is not only shocking, but it’s also chilling that a boy could do this.
“I’ve never dealt with something like this and I’m not aware of any other case in this country. He thought he could commit the perfect murder and get away with it.”
The Daily Mirror calls him the “Corrie copycat killer”. Daniel Batham had seen Coronation Street character John Snape murder a woman with a hammer.
The paper adds:
Violent video games and films, including The Amityville Horror and Final Destination – suitable only for people aged over 18 – were also found.
No. Final Destination and the Amityville Horror both have a 15 certificates.
They also discovered that websites he had looked up included “Man kills wife and makes it”; “How to get away with murder” and “People who get away with murder in shows”.
And forensic examinations of his computer also found footage of violent scenes from Trial and Retribution, EastEnders, Hollyoaks, and Coronation Street – the latter including the scene where the character John Stape kills a woman with a hammer.
So. Is he the Corrie killer? No. John Snape left the body of victim in the wreckage of a tram crash. Daniel Bartlam did not murder his mother because of a Coronation Street plot.
The BBC makes no mention of Corrie. It says:
He told a counsellor voices were telling him to hurt people and that he had had visions of killing people, the court was told.
He wasn’t only turning in to Corrie, then.
The Telegraph leads with the Corrie angle but adds:
Also found [in the killer’s room] was a deleted story created four days before the real crime in which the main character, called Daniel, who “from around 2012 up to his death in 2047 got away with rape, murder, gbh, robbery and during his teenage years countless vandalisms against his neighbours”.
Paul Cheston is able to read all that and tell Evening Standard readers:
A 15-year-old boy has been detained for 16 years for killing his mother with a hammer after being inspired by a plot from Coronation Street.
Amid this tabloid madness, based on the prosecutor’s case that Daniel Bartlam lived in a “fantasy world” – much like tabloid reporters – ITV taks the bait and pops up a to say:
“ITV takes careful steps to ensure that pre-watershed drama is appropriate for a family audience, and the Stape murder scenes in Coronation Street were fully compliant.”
All depends if you find murder entertaining and Corrie like any anything approaching the real life it pretends to be with its ridiculous health warnings.
If you have been affected by Coronation Street and issues raised on the show, please seek urgent medial help.
