The football teams that changed their kits and won and lost their identities
Arsenal
For the first two decades of their existence – during which they were known as ‘Dial Square’, ‘Royal Arsenal’ and ‘Woolwich Arsenal’, before settling on ‘Arsenal’ – the Gunners played in burgundy shirts. They switched to red straight after the First World War. The white sleeves were introduced in the middle of the 1932-33 season, with no ill effects – they won the league, and then retained it in 1933-34. Since then they have gone on to win the championship on a regular basis – though not in their centenary season, when they wore burgundy again for old times’ sake.
VERDICT: Success!
