The football teams that changed their kits and won and lost their identities
Coventry City
As ‘Singers’, the club wore pink-and-blue, blue-and-white, blue, black, and red-and-black, before becoming Coventry City in 1898. Thereafter in was a succession of blue combinations in different shades, red-and-green for half a season, and a variety of blue-and-white combos until 1962, when they became ‘The Sky Blues’. This was nothing to do with Sky TV, however, and everything to do with Jimmy Hill, who became chairman. A handful of seasons apart, they have stuck with this kit ever since. I986-87 was a sky blue-and-white stripe season, however, and it was then that they won the FA Cup – their sole major trophy.
Verdict: Qualified success.
