The Boy Scouts of America perversion files feature not a single gay
GRIM news in the latimes.com that the Boy Scouts of America has a secret dossier of “perversion files” used to tracks sexual deviants in woggles. Oddly, the BSA has a policy of bigotry, banning gays and lesbian adults from working with children.
The BSA website trills:
The Boy Scouts of America takes great pride in the quality of our adult leadership. Being a leader in the BSA is a privilege, not a right. While no current screening techniques exist that can identify every potential child molester, we can reduce the risk of accepting a child molester by learning all we can about an applicant for a leadership position—his or her experience with children, why he or she wants to be a Scout leader, and what discipline techniques he or she would use…
The LA Times reports:
Scouting officials say they’ve used the files to prevent hundreds of men who had been expelled for alleged sexual abuse from returning to the ranks. They’ve fought hard in court to keep the records from public view, saying confidentiality was needed to protect victims, witnesses and anyone falsely accused.
“It is a fact that Scouts are safer because the barrier created by these files is real,” Scouts Chief Executive Robert Mazzuca said in video posted on the organization’s website in June.
A Los Angeles Times review of more than 1,200 files dating from 1970 to 1991 found more than 125 cases across the country in which men allegedly continued to molest Scouts after the organization was first presented with detailed allegations of abusive behavior.
It’s a hot topic. The AP says Eagle Scouts are returning their medals. Mitt Romney is on the side of the angels:
In contrast to Obama, Republican candidate Mitt Romney does have a public position on the Scouts’ policy — he politely disagrees with it.
Back in 1994, during a political debate in Massachusetts, Romney said this: “I support the right of the Boy Scouts of America to decide what it wants to do on that issue. I feel that all people should be able to participate in the Boy Scouts regardless of their sexual orientation.”
A Romney spokeswoman, Andrea Saul, said in an e-mail that this remains Romney’s position today.
Romney was once on the Boy Scouts’ National Executive Board. His original comment was made while he was on the group’s head table. As Towerload notes, that “they” should be “we”.
Curent sponsors of the bigoted group include: AT&T, ExxonMobil, INDYCAR and Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation.
