‘Don’t Roof Rack Me, Bro!’ – the Mitt Romney dog song
DO dog lovers care for Mitt Romney, who once made a 12 -hour trip in 1983 with his Irish setter Seamus in a cage on the car’s roof? Do they care for Barack Obama, who in Dreams from My Father, recalled mealtimes in Indonesia with his stepfather Lolo Soetoro:
“I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy). Like many Indonesians, Lolo followed a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths. He explained that a man took on the powers of whatever he ate: One day soon, he promised, he would bring home a piece of tiger meat for us to share.”
Devo recall Romney’s tip in Don’t Roof Rack Me, Bro! Says the band’s Gerald Casale to Rolling Stone:
“This isn’t a red-state thing or Devo stumping for Obama..But I think any animal lover that hears the story will learn so much about the character flaw of Romney. It’s just a deal-breaker about the man. My God, the world is a scary place with seven billion people. What you want in a leader is a guy with some humanity at his core. I just don’t feel that Mitt does.”
In 2008, Devo did a fundraising show for President Obama in their hometown of Akron. Does Casale approve of his job performance over the past three-and-a-half years? “No!” he says. “Absolutely not. “
