76-year-old drugs smuggler did it to keep active
HOW do you keep active in your dotage? To Germany, where a 76-year-old grandmother tells the court she imported a tonne of cannabis from Holland to keep active.
A Düsseldorf judge has sent her to prison for two-and-half years for smuggling the drugs over a five-year period.
She says her career began in 2006. Her car broken down near Venlo. Two men stopped to help. They asked her to deliver a few washing powder containers to Germany. Soon she was earning €700 a trip.
Her lawyer painted a picture of a kindly old dear in thrall of tough nuts, telling the court she was under pressure and: “My client was acting under no criminal impetus.” Indeed, the only benefit to her was that “the driving kept her mobile in old age”.
The judge declared her a “really robust pensioner” and sent her down.
In other news, the Old Anorakians Crown Green Bowling team are proud of their new balls and kits bags donated by their brothers and sisters, Colombia’s Young Pablo Escobarians.
