Letter of the week: suffering the conductors
LETTER of the week featured in the Times:
Sir, What a pleasant surprise it was to see Bernard Haitink dressed correctly conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, also dressed correctly in white tie and tails, at the Prom concert on September 7.
Why doesn’t the BBC establish a dress code for conductors and players? So often we have to suffer conductors in something akin to a waiter’s jacket and ill-fitting black trousers.
I know the ethos of the Proms is to appeal to a wide cross-section of the public, but properly dressed performers give pleasure to the eye as well as the ear.Elva Quaife
