April Jones: Cerebal palsy and Mark Bridger’s ‘keen’ Swiss Army Knife
APRIL JONES: the missing five-year-old is in the papers.
Daily Star (front page): “Please find my little angel – Mum’s tearful plea”
Daily Mail (front page): “Missing April needs daily medicine for cerebral palsy”
The Sun (front page): “Tears, clues and a man in custody – but still no April”
Daily Express (front page): “Please help find her”
All other newspaper lead with a picures of April Jones’s mother, Coral Jones. As the search for her daughter continues in and around Machynlleth, Powys, Carol jones makes a TV appeal:
“It has been 36 hours since our April was taken from us. There must be someone out there who knows where she is and can help the police find her.” Beside her sat April’s grandfather, Dai Smith, who put a comforting arm around Mrs Jones, his stepson’s wife, as she struggled to complete the short statement. “We are desperate for any news. April is only five years old. Please, please help us find her.”
Many police eyes are on Mark Bridger. He has not been charged with any offence. Still. The Telegraph has news:
Mark Bridger, the man suspected of kidnapping five-year-old April Jones is a keen weapons collector who kept samurai swords and deactivated guns in his home, a neighbour has disclosed.
Keen? Hmmm. Go on:
Ben Edwards, 22, said Mark Bridger, 46, had rifles and handguns mounted on his wall. Mr Edwards said the older man told him the weapons had been “made safe” and showed him a firearms licence for a rifle he kept in a box. He said: “Mark also kept samurai swords on the table, he was a bit of a weapons collector and his style was military. He loved his Swiss Army knife, which he always carried around with him.”
Ex-soldier who lives in mid-Wales countryside has Swiss Army knife. The police may need more than that.
One paper break ranks. The Daily Mirror uses its front page to ask:
“IS THIS HER KIDNAPPER – Cops probe film of mystery man spotted near swollen river”
A click on the photograph reveals that the Mirror has saved the photo as “Mark Bridger”.
So. Not a scoop, then. Just the tabloid asking a question.
