Man lay dead in Surrey bookmaker’s toilet for four or five days
THE National Bad Toilet of the Year award 2012 goes to…the Coral bookmakers in Stanwell, Surrey, where a body lay for four or five days without being noticed. The body of 39-year-old Marc Smithers could have been in the toilets for days.
Keith Clark, 55, from St Mary’s Close in Stanwell, tells Get Surrey:
“If the door had been kicked in on Thursday night, he might still be alive. If it turns out he died between Friday and Sunday, there’s going to be big problems. The family is going to be completely devastated that he was in there for four or five days.”
Mr Clark said between Thursday and Saturday he went to use the toilet but was unable to get in. The door can only be locked from within. He says he told Coral staff. He says they did nothing.
Coral’s PR director Simon Clare goes on the record:
“It’s clearly a tragic event. Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the deceased and we are assisting police with their enquiries. Until we know more, I cannot comment further at this stage.”
Failing to add that the toilets are checked at weekly intervals, and if one customer spends days on the loo, there but for the grace of God go we…
