NELSON Mandela was the most famous prisoner in the world. Then South Africa saw sense and the light. The country’s white leaders let him go. He became a global superstar. Mandela returned to Libya to present Gadhafi with South Africa s highest honor for a foreigner. The Libyan trip, Mandela s second in less than a week, prompted speculation that he might try to mediate an end to 5-year-old U.N. sanctions backed by the United States and Britain. South African officials, however, denied Mandela had any such plans. (AP Photo/Enric Marti)
