First Atheist church in UK opens
SINCE everyone decided religion was a really stupid idea, mainly because a bunch of left-leaning comedians said-so, and of course, various religions abused children, blew people up and cut off a load of foreskins, there’s been a lot of volume concerning the veracity of worship.
On one hand, we’ve got hooting zealots, the other, sneering know-it-alls… and the creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig…
Naturally, there are some people left in the middle who are either don’t know what to think, believe in God and are rather sweet with it and those that firmly don’t believe but are happy for other people to get on with their lives the best they see fit. However, these nice people are drowned out by everyone else, all slinging shit at each other in a bid to seem the most cocksure.
With that, we’ll let you decide for yourself what to think of the UK’s first atheist church, which has opened in Islington, London.
The church has been founded by comedians Pippa Evana and Sanderson Jones, who came up with the idea together. It has been reported that Jones describes the service as “part atheist church” and “part foot-stomping show”, and that the pair “just want people to feel encouraged and excited when they leave”.
Presumably there’ll be CDs for sale in the foyer.
Of course, not everyone is happy about this. A Catholic parish priest from nearby Finsbury told reporters that while it was “important” for non-believers to be engaged with faith, “for them to establish a church like any other religious denomination is going too far. I’m cautious about it”.
Either way, seeing as this Atheist church is asking people to leave the house and listen to someone prattle on, it won’t be long before the founders are wringing their hands and worrying about low turnout, just like Anglican churches.

Brainchild of Ariane Sherine, the UK’s first ever atheist campaign is launched today as the slogan ‘There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life’ is displayed on 800 buses, 1000 posters on the underground and two large screens on Oxford Street. Date: 06/01/2009.
