Lancashire duo killed and roasted lamb in field, a la Bear Grylls
OUR attitude to meat is odd. We’re all entertained when Bear Grylls pops up on the telly to climb inside a hollowed out camel or eats raw zebra. But when Matthew Davidson, 28, and Kevin Sherratt, 33, picked up a lamb at a Macclesfield, Cheshire, farm, killed it with a hammer and roasted it, we’re sending them to court.
Police wanted to charge the pair with animal cruelty. But the courts said there was insufficient evidence to say that the animal had suffered. Because beating a creature’s head in with a hammer is not cruel. Neither is slitting its throat or shooting it in the face with a shotgun.
If you like eating meat, you need to accept that being killed and roasted is unlikely to be what the animal would have wanted, even if Jamie Oliver is working the pan.
At Macclesfield Magistrates’ Court, both men admitted criminal damage and theft .
So much for the drunken criminals. Her’s a sober and sane Bear Grylls heading to Ireland to eat a farmer’s sheep for our enjoyment. Did he buy the sheep?
