On January 21, 1958, Rock Hudson told his wife he was gay – a Private Dick made this recording
IN 1958, Hollywood hunk Rock Hudson was talking to his wife Phyllis. Hudson was 32. In 1985, he died from Aids. He had been living a lie. He was gay. The Hollywood Reporter claims to have gotten hold of the transcripts of a recording made by a private detective named Fred Otash who had bugged Hudson’s apparent chat with Phyllis at her request:
Hudson had taken a Rorschach test.
Phyllis: “You told me you saw thousands of butterflies and also snakes. [A therapist] told me in my analysis that butterflies mean femininity and snakes represent that male penis. I’m not condemning you, but it seems that as long as you recognize your problem, you would want to do something about it.”
Phyllis: “Everyone knows that you were picking up boys off the street shortly after we were married and have continued to do so, thinking that being married would cover up for you.”
Rock: “I have never picked up any boys on the street. have never picked up any boys in a bar, never. I have never picked up any boys, other than to give them a ride.”
He says he told his psychologist “everything”.
Phyllis: “You mean about your homosexuality?”
Rock: “Yes, I told him everything.”
Phylis says being gay is an “an emotional state”. Adding that “it’s up to the individual to grow out of it”. She then refers to “your great speed with me sexually. Are you that fast with the boys?”
Rock: “Well, it’s a physical conjunction [sic]. Boys don’t fit. So, this is why it lasts longer.”
