‘Going to Santorini’: Carine Patry Hoskins and David Sherborne in Leveson earn ‘n’ tell
CARINE Patry Hoskins earned £218,606 for her work on the Leveson Inquiry into media standards. He worked on the Inquiry between July 2011 and November 2012.
Hoskins, a married mother of two interviewed witnesses. She reviewed their statements and conducted legal research. She was fact checking.
Hoskins began a relationships with barrister David Sherborne, who had represented phone hacking victims. Four months before the inquiry ended the pair went on holiday together to Santorini.
Conservative MP Rob Wilson says two lawyers working on different sides of the inquiry geting involved with one another as the inquiry into standards is ongoing was “completely inappropriate”.
Lord Justice Leveson said Hoskins showed a “real commitment” to her work on the inquiry.
But what about that holiday? The Sun (prop. R. Murdoch), which is no fan of Lord Leveson, says that whilst away…
They claimed they discussed “the possibility of a future relationship” and decided against it. But they later changed their minds and became a couple after the inquiry ended last November.
Nicely put. The Sun gave its readers an offer:
Been flirting like mad with each other at work but still unsure whether to cross that line of love and start a full-blown affair? We are giving away a FREE holiday for two romantic readers to the beautiful Greek island of Santorini!’
Rachel Johnson opined:
So it’s all very amusing – for us, at any rate. Plus ‘going to Santorini’ now enters the lexicon, along with ‘crossing the Rubicon’ when it comes to statutory regulation of the press, and ‘Ugandan discussions’, when it comes to sexual relations.
Ugandan Discussion is a phrase favoured by Private Eye magazine. It nails Hoskins’ fact checking:
Who is that hunky barrister over there?
Is he married?
What’s Santorini like at this time of year?
Will they start referring to the job as fuck checking?
Hoskins was, of course, the Woman On the Left. The Sun reported:
CARINE Patry Hoskins became known as “the woman on the left” during the inquiry — after TV cameras appeared to catch her swooning over Hugh Grant. The lawyer was given the nickname due to her seating position next to lead counsel Robert Jay QC at the press ethics hearings. TV viewers watched as she seemingly hung on Grant’s every word during the two-and-a-half hours he was quizzed by Mr Jay.
On Sky TV (prop. R. Murdoch) Adam Bouton was scathing of Hoskins: He saw her looking at the Guardian editor, Alan Rusbridger, and tweeted:
“The incompetence of Leveson beggars belief. Why on earth has #womanontheleft been called in to simper at Alan Rusbridger?”
The New Statesman’s Helen Lewis tweeted: “Adam Boulton neatly illustrating my belief that the #womanontheleft hashtag was used by some to belittle Patry Hoskins’s abilities…”
True enough. Whilst Hoskins is in the line of fire, the worst thing fired at Mr Sherborne is that he is “perma-tanned” (all papers).
Looks like it was wasn’t all room service in Santoni, after all, allegedly…
