Madeleine McCann: post heatwave news
MADELEINE McCann: what news? Time for a brief catch-up on the missing child who became the biggest story of the past years:
The Daily Star leads:
The front-page headline runs:
“We can still find missing Maddie”
By this stage of the summer, we’ve often had the grim spectacle of no-news on the child filling many pages of newsprint. But this summer, what with hot weather and Andy Murray at Wimbledon, the tabloids have not pressed ‘f9’ too often. But now that the rain is here and the football season has yet to begin, we get front-page news. The Star reports:
Heart specialist Gerry McCann, 45, said he was “delighted” the Metropolitan Police had opened an investigation into her disappearance.
As ever, the tabloid tells us the man’s job. We hear him say:
“I’m not going to accept my child’s dead unless there’s absolutely conclusive proof. We have always lived in the hope that we could find Madeleine.. It is very important to us, naturally. Not a day goes by when we don’t think about Madeleine. As Andy Redwood said, and I’m sure every single parent would agree, you’re not going to accept your child’s dead unless there’s absolutely conclusive proof.
“So we have always lived in the hope that we could find Madeleine. Given the number of cases of children who have been taken and found many years later, there is real hope.
“We knew there were lots and lots of leads that needed to be followed up.”
And that is front-page news. and one day later, the Express has its own news:
There is “FRESH HOPE”. There is “NEW EVIDENCE”.
But there isn’t any new evidence. What there is is Mr McCann telling ITV’s Daybreak:
“It’s a big step forward. The most important thing is that for the first time the authorities are actively investigating and we’ve been delighted with the work the Metropolitan Police have been doing over the past couple of years. We knew there were lots of leads that needed to be followed up.”
Such are the facts.
Madeleine McCann is missing – still missing. There are no suspects. There is no proof what crime if any befell her.
